Our History

/ a.lor / iz.

1. A defined plot of farmland. To sow the field.

2. area, field, plot of land.

The history of Alorrenea dates back to 2001, in Astigarraga, with a project by Xabier Mariezkurrena and Garbiñe Etxezarreta’s family. From the very beginning, they have had a clear vision: to oversee the entire cider-making process, from the orchard to the bottle. Over time, this vision has grown through hard work, enthusiasm and daily dedication.

Along the way, new apple trees have been planted and the orchards expanded to ensure close monitoring of the apples’ provenance and quality. In Aia, the apples grow on the trees at the Beldarrain farmstead, whilst the cider is produced in Astigarraga. Alorrenea’s character is shaped by the connection between these two places, rooted in their relationship with nature and the local land.

The family has always been at the heart of this project. Over the years, Xabier and Garbiñe’s children have also joined in, strengthening the intergenerational bond and ensuring the project’s future. Thus, Alorrenea is a constantly growing family project, true to its origins and its way of doing things.

But Alorrenea is not just about cider. It is also a place to gather round the table, share moments with friends and family, celebrate and enjoy the tradition of the Basque cider house. That is why we keep our doors open and our range of products available all year round, to ensure every visit is an enjoyable experience.

Today, our daily work combines the legacy of the past with what we are building today. Behind our cider lies the story of a family, but also that of everyone who shares a table with us. We do not merely preserve tradition: we continue to live it, creating new moments together.

Making cider isn’t just about filling a bottle. It’s also about tending the apple trees, choosing the right moment to harvest and making the most of what each apple has to offer. That’s why we closely monitor every step of the process, combining knowledge and experience to give our cider its unique character.

For us, every cider is the result of the land, the year’s harvest and the work that has gone into it. That is why we pay special attention to quality and detail, remaining true to our roots and keeping alive the knowledge of cider-making that has been passed down from generation to generation.
